Invicro seeks a Sr. Scientist to handle complex immunohistochemistry assay development utilizing the most advanced technology available for histopathology and tissue imaging studies within the Advanced Pathology Services (APS) department at Invicro in our Boston, MA site.  In this position, the successful candidate will apply her/his assay development and experimental pathology skills and expertise to contribute to sponsored research efforts and Invicro’s internal research and development efforts.  The candidate will work closely with PhD level biologists and image analysis experts to develop and implement state-of-the-art wet-bench methodologies and whole slide image acquisition for downstream analysis. The Sr Scientist is highly self-motivated and goal-oriented, and is able to apply a wide range of wet-bench and histology-based techniques, such as IHC, multiplex-IF, and ISH.  They must have familiarity and experience in tissue image analysis involving immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence multiplexing.  The Sr Scientist is an innovative thinker, capable of taking initiatives and working independently as well as in the team setting, with proven capability of attention to detail across a range of disease model systems. To be successful in this role, they must be able to recognize logistical problems, and initiate appropriate solutions independently. Ideal candidates will be detail-oriented, can multitask in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.

The Sr Scientist will be solutions focused, and willing to bring creative problem-solving skills to challenges along the way. They will be scientifically-oriented; they will enjoy learning and being involved in the content of our collaboration activities, and able to converse fluidly with internal and external team members on project goals and activities. The role will require strong intuitive capabilities; the ability to work in the 'gray zone' and anticipate challenges before they arise. They must have developed ability to communicate clearly and concisely with all stakeholders.  They will be able to self-organize and operate effectively without significant day-to-day oversight, while staying tightly connected to key leaders and teams across the collaborations.

Key Objectives/Deliverables:

  • Contribute to the development of complex IHC/histology/RNAscope based assays
  • Characterize antibodies, conduct reagent evaluation and perform reagent qualification/tissue preparation optimization assessments for novel technologies
  • Troubleshoot technical challenges and provide scientific and technical input to project teams
  • Liaise with project scientists and project managers to ensure optimum design of experiments
  • Work collaboratively with internal and external partners, academic institutions, pharmaceutical companies, CROs and consultants as required.
  • Maintain an awareness of new / emerging techniques and tools relevant to the field.
  • Design, execute experiments and perform data analysis, crafting documents and presentations independently, advancing scientific understanding.
  • Provide conceptual guidance into experimental design, integrated data analysis and communication of results to scientific teams and management
  • Generate novel ideas and contribute to their validation.

 Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

  • Perform high-throughput automated immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization
  • Embedding, processing, and sectioning of fixed and frozen tissues
  • Develop immunohistochemical (IHC) and immunofluorescent (IF) techniques on mammalian tissue sections to develop and implement histology assays, including single- and multiplexing.
  • Generate experimental results using whole slide scanners
  • Perform experiments to improve assay performance and robustness
  • Perform antibody assay validations with frozen/FFPE tissue samples
  • Discuss and present experimental data and research findings in both written and oral formats.
  • Assist scientific staff in refining and developing of experiment protocols
  • Work collaboratively on multiple concurrent projects and coordinate activities with other team members.
  • Assist in assay method development and provide technique and application support for less senior staff.
  • Contribute to experimental design, data analysis, critical thinking, and problem-solving to improve methods or procedures
  • Maintenance/tracking of collected samples and slides
  • Follow laboratory safety guidelines and practices

 Qualifications

  • B.S. or Masters degree in molecular biology, cancer biology, immunology, pathology, or related fields with 15+ years of histology laboratory experience; or advanced degree (PhD) with 5+ years of relevant histology experience
  • Proven record in translational pathology in academia/biopharmaceutical industry using a wide array of anatomic pathology laboratory platforms (e.g., histology, IHC/ISH/IF/multiplexing, light/fluorescent/ microscopy, digital pathology and image analysis) in a diverse disease model systems.
  • Extensive hands-on experience in assay protocol development, optimization, and trouble-shooting for IHC/ISH/multiplexing assays and whole slide scanning.
  • General knowledge about image analysis software and approaches.
  • Excellent organization and planning skills and the ability to work under timeline in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to adapt and exercise flexibility for changing platform needs, workflows and projects.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment to collaborate effectively cross-functionally and in a team setting.
  • Scientifically rigorous, highly organized, and with significant attention to detail
