The Laboratory Operations Manager will direct day-to-day operations of the Advanced Pathology Services (APS) lab at 27 Drydock Ave in Boston.  The focus will be primarily on managing the operational elements of our testing processes, including standard and advanced staining and immunohistochemistry processes (IHC, IF, ISH, multiplexing, etc.) and Invicro’s proprietary immunohistochemistry based (Quanticell™), Cryofluorescent Tomography (CFT), and autoradiography approaches.  The Laboratory Operations Manager will report to the Vice President of Research and Applications for Advanced Pathology Services, and in partnership with their supervisor be focused on the achievement of major business goals. They will manage a growing group of 4-6 laboratory scientists to drive study task workflow and resource management for assay development and validation efforts, as well as support strategies for our internal research and development activities. 

The Laboratory Operations Manager will participate as part of a larger cross-functional team to coordinate troubleshooting, process improvements, and/or implement new workflows or products.  They will be a central point of contact and direction for the scientific staff within APS and also the rest of the Discovery and Preclinical Services (DPS) team within Invicro to support pharma partner requests, processes, and general communication needs.  A key aspect of the role is as an interface between APS team members involved in laboratory operations and the cross-functional scientific teams which histopathology and molecular imaging efforts at this Invicro site.  They will act as a liaison with all functions within the APS lab to help drive APS projects and collaborate with other APS and DPS team leads/supervisors/managers in assigning work/developing rotational schedules and assigning team duties.

The Laboratory Operations Manager must be familiar with typical histopathology laboratory processes such as microtomy and embedding, equipment maintenance, solution and reagent preparation, IHC autostainers, whole slide scanners, and other tasks typical of  a high complexity histopathology laboratory, as well as being able to learn and understand our proprietary processes that support drug discovery and development for our customers. They will collaborate with internal teams, vendors, and others as needed to resolve issues, maintain ongoing functionality, and document service/PM/repair work.   They will demonstrate commitment to meeting TAT objectives, quality metrics, key performance indicators, and ensuring an environment of continuous improvement.   They will assist in the development of competency, training and orientation of histopathology staff.  They will evaluate laboratory staff performance, providing input to reviews, corrective action and recruitment of new hires.

 

Key Duties:

  • Manage laboratory staff, equipment, and processes.
  • Act as the laboratory representative to internal stakeholders.
  • Manage daily team activities and scheduling. Monitors work to ensure timely completion.
  • Participate in discussions with customers to establish scope of work / timeline / cost for proposed projects where needed.
  • Prepare and present project status updates to management team and sponsor(s).
  • Complete and update documentation to meet customer expectations.
  • Perform development / testing / sourcing as required, for individual projects.
  • Perform whole slide image capture and quantitative analysis according to project requirements.
  • Maintain inventory and equipment maintenance
  • Participate in audits, providing subject matter expertise for Histology and IHC.
  • Participate in departmental lab meetings acting as IHC subject matter expert.
  • Participate in obtaining professional certifications as required.
  • Provide guidance and training to all staff on newly introduced assays or methodologies
  • Act as subject matter expert for technical questions regarding Histology IHC, ISH, IF and Imaging.

Qualifications and Skills:

  • Knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures and laboratory standards to evaluate department and recommend improvement.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols, including radiation safety.
  • Knowledge of laboratory equipment and testing to monitor quality control checks and determine needs and evaluate equipment for purchase.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff.
  • Knowledge of safety requirements to provide instructions and recognize and correct hazardous conditions.
  • Excellent communication, managerial, and scientific qualities are expected
  • Ability to interact effectively across boundaries using influencing and relationship building skills
  • Ability to identify issues early and proposes innovative solutions as guidance to multi-disciplinary teams and senior management
  • Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of business methods including productivity/workload analysis and scheduling.
  • Skill in performing a range of laboratory tests and operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
  • Skill in appropriate collection/analysis/presentation of staffing, productivity, and cost data on a routine and special-project basis.
  • Skill in using computer programs and applications.
  • Experience with Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Proficiency utilizing Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Excel and Power Point.
  • Skill in personnel management and effective training sessions.
  • Ability to analyze workload requirements and schedule personnel appropriately.
  • Ability to listen, read, understand, and follow oral, and written instruction.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems.

Minimum Education and Experience:

  • Minimum BS in a Biological or Life Science.
  • 10+ years of histopathology laboratory experience in pharma, hospital or CRO
  • 5+ years in a supervisory or management role
